Academia in the Downtown
The San Francisco Center for Economic Development, commercial real estate firm JLL, and architecture firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill have explored the viability of establishing an "Urban University District" in downtown San Francisco. Leveraging the city's existing academic institutions like University of San Francisco, as well as underutilized commercial spaces like the Emporium and 5M development, the analysis has identified compelling opportunities to create a thriving hub of higher education, innovation, and community engagement.
Key considerations include repurposing existing buildings, fostering partnerships between universities and employers, and developing innovative student housing solutions. With strong support from the city, strategic public-private collaboration, and a focus on attracting international students, this district could transform San Francisco into a premier destination for 21st century urban learning and collaboration.
International Expo 2035
In the aftermath of the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake, which devastated over 80% of the city’s infrastructure, San Francisco faced the daunting task of recovery and rebuilding its reputation. The city successfully hosted the Panama-Pacific International Exposition in 1915, which helped reestablish San Francisco on the global stage, boost its economy, and attract international investors, laying the groundwork for future growth. Since then, World Expos have continued to generate positive economic impacts and drive infrastructure development.
Today, San Francisco remains an iconic international destination. Renowned for its stunning views, historic architecture, and cutting-edge technology, the City offers a uniquely valuable place in which to host the 2035 International Exposition. The San Francisco Center for Economic Development along with HOK, a global design and architectural firm, and Nixon Peabody are currently in the exploration phase of bringing the expo to San Francisco.
